Feelin The Jazz

I’ve always been inspired by abstract or impressionistic paintings of bands playing that I see hanging on the wall, out in the wild.

This photo was a good 4 months in the making. Taken back in March of 2019 at the Irish Attic in Douglasville, GA. My friend Carl’s band Sweet Soul Sister was part of a Lost On Peachtree show with other artists. Taking photos indoors in low light, handheld is a quite challenging, especially with moving people ! But I’m more a fan of capturing the energy of the band while they are playing then a posed photo anyhow. I experimented with some pointillism using Topaz Impression, but the results didn’t have the abstract/impressionistic feel I was going for.

Here is that version

Topaz recently came out with Studio 2. This has a big redesign that I quite like from Studio and I found the AIremix Filters pretty cool. With some experimentation, I used two of them to enhance the above photo to achieve this result.

Since this was in an Irish venue, I like the green tones throughout, mixed with purple. It creates a warm theme to go along with the Jazz scene.

Here’s a bonus of the guitar player ! Although with an edgier feel.

One thing to note is, in my experience, Studio 2 edits are not available in the Develop module in Lightroom. So it appears Studio 2 saves a read only file or one that can only be updated in Studio 2.

Surreal, abstract, bold and minimal are themes that continue to evoke that curious spark of discovering what is possible. Through twists and turns, the image and my imagination are the guide through this art in progress.
